Vinyasa and Yin Yoga

I have a deep appreciation for all things yoga and the list continues to grow. But, when it comes to the physical practice of yoga, or asana, Vinyasa and Yin are at the top. The reason being is that each style has powerful effects. That being said, I crave each style at different times. So, why is that and what is the difference between the two styles? Let’s explore.

Vinyasa yoga is a beautiful exploration of weaving together breath and movement. The breath serves as a vital element delivering oxygen and nutrients to muscles and mind alike. In Vinyasa, the breath is a tool that allows the body to move with ease and purpose. I like to think of it as a dance. Inhales and exhales matched delightfully flowing from pose to pose. If you’re wanting something invigorating and heat building, this is a wonderful style to add to your practice. Vinyasa stimulates creativity and connection. Each class is different, much like each day of life is different. It builds resilience and confidence as well as stamina and strength. It is also one of the most common offerings, but depending on the teacher the experiences can vary greatly.

Yin Yoga is on the other side of the pendulum. Where Vinyasa builds heat, Yin is cooling. Yin yoga is deeply soothing and the breath is equally as important. Poses in yin are typically held for several minutes, relying heavily on gravity to open and lengthen the body. Yin is a beautiful, serene place for the mind to rest while the body is tended to with loving kindness. Classes are generally held in low light with soft music or in silence. It is also where props, such as blocks, pillows, and blankets, come out to play to support the body in any way possible.
